Acid rain

Acid rain is rainfall made so acidic by pollution that it causes environmental harm, mostly to forests and lakes. The main cause is the industrial burning of coal and other fossil fuels, the waste gets burnt which turns to gas and combines with atmospheric water to form acid. 

Acid rain experiment: Method in a petri dish take a plastic way boat and around it put a small chunk of apple (moist), 3 drops of universal indicator, 3 drops of bromothymol, small flower petal (moist) and calcium carbonate (moist) 

Changes: The apple should go harder than before, the calcium carbonate should go crusty, the flower should go hard, the bromothynol blue should go green, the universal indicator should go red

Gymnastics

last week for P.E. we started gymnastics. This video here is me doing a front flip on the mini-tramp, I think that if I kept trying toland it would have got it. I think that I could improve on my landing.

Digestive system

Oesophagus:

The oesophagus is a muscular tube connecting the throat with the stomach. The oesophagus is about 8 inches long and is lined by moist pink tissue called mucosa. The oesophagus runs behind the windpipe and heart, and in front of the spine.
Based on the dimensions of a giraffe oesophagus, the researchers estimated that a full one can hold about 1.3 gallons. The oesophagus is about 9-10 inches (25 centimetres) long and less than an inch (2 centimetres) in diameter when relaxed. Food going down the oesophagus is like reverse pooping because of your pushing stuff in rather than out

Stomach:

The stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. The stomach receives food from the oesophagus. As food reaches the end of the oesophagus, it enters the stomach through a muscular valve called the lower oesophagal sphincter. The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. The stomach is the widest part of the digestive system. It not only digests food, but it also stores it. The stomach can hold a bit more than 1 litre of food at once. The design of the stomach allows a person to eat a large meal that can be digested slowly. Did you know that the platypus 

Large intestine:

The large intestine, also known as the large bowel, is the last part of the digestive system in vertebrates. Water is absorbed here and the remaining waste material is stored as faeces before being removed by defecation. Cows intestines are 20 times longer than its own body length, a blue whale's large intestine can be 220 which is only 7 to 8 times its body length

Liver:

The liver is a large, meaty organ that sits on the right side of the belly. ... The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. As it does so, the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines. The liver also makes proteins important for blood clotting and other functions. The liver is high in vitamin A, folic acid, iron, and zinc. The liver is the most nutrient-dense organ meat, and it is a powerful source of vitamin A. Vitamin A is beneficial for eye health and for reducing diseases that cause inflammation, including everything from Alzheimer's disease to arthritis.

Small intestine:

The small intestine (small bowel) is about 20 feet long and about an inch in diameter. Its job is to absorb most of the nutrients from what we eat and drink. Velvety tissue lines the small intestine, which is divided into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The cow has a longer small intestine this is because it requires long small intestine to digest the cellulose which it gets from the plant it feeds on. Tiger needs the smallest small intestine so that the meat can be easily digested.

Aim: to test if a sample of food contains protein

Method:
1. Place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
2. Add 5 drops of copper sulphate.
3. shake the test tube.

Results: If the solution remains blue, then no protein is present. If the solution changes to a purple colour then protein is present in the sample

Conclusion: if food sample has protein in it should turn purple is not it will stay blue.

The Benedicts test

Aim: To test a sample of food the determine whether it contains simple sugars

Equipment: Bunsen burner, test tube tongs, Benedict's solution, a sample of food

Method:

1. Place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube then add 5 drops of Benedict's solution.
2. Heat with a bunsen until it changes colour. Do not boil

Results: A positive test for simple sugar results in the Benedicts Solution changing from a blue colour to an orange colour. No colour change is a negative result.

Conclusion the Benedicts solutuion changes colour the the sample is simple sugar

Hunt for the Wilderpeople essay

Since the start of term 2, we have been doing an essay on Hunt for the Wildepeople which is worrying because it's my first essay. For the essay, we had to pick 3 aspects of the film to write a paragraph about and the three that I chose are dialogue, camera shots and flashbacks. For the dialogue I was focusing on how Ricky was shy then as the film went on he got less shy. For the flashbacks, I am focusing on how it shows us what Ricky is capable of doing for example littering, lighting fires and tagging. For the camera shots, I'm writing about how when Uncle Hec and aunty Bella pull their knives out they get an extreme close up on the knife when they pull their knives out. That is what I'm doing my essay about.

The Dropping Pins Experiment

Aim: To observe conduction along a metal rod

1. Set up and light a Bunsen Burner
2. Smear a small amount of petroleum jelly on to the head of each drawing pin
3. Attach the drawing pins at even intervals along the length of metal rod
4. Clamp one end of the metal rod to a retort stands
5. Position the retort stand so the unclamped end of the metal rod is in the Bunsen flame and start the stopwatch
6. Record the time it takes for each pin to drop on the table below

Explanation: The heat was transfering down the rod which made the pins vibrate thne they fell off when the heat became to much and that traveled down the line

Purple Water Experiment

Aim: To make a dilution series to investigate.

Method: To place 6 test tubes in a test tube rack 1-6
- Using the measuring cylinder, fill test tube 1 with 10 mL of water. Using the  5 remaining test tubes with 5 mL of water.
- Using tweezers, add a single crystal of potassium permanganate to a test tube.
- Gently shake the test tube to the potassium permanganate has dissolved.
- Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly to the purple solution is gone
- Gently shake test tube 2 and repeat the process, transfer exactly 5 mL of the solution from test tube 2 to 3
- Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly again and repeat the transfer process for test tube 4, 5 and 6.

The results: First we added the solute which was potassium pomegranate into the test tube the water started turning purple then all the water went purple. Once that happened we to 5ml out of the first one which had 10ml in it with a pipette then transferred it into another test tube that had 5ml in it then we repeated that with our other test tubes. While we were doing that the other one got lighter purple.

Table Tennis Ball Drop

AIM: To find out how high the ball will bounce if you drop it from different heights.

Hypothesis:

The higher the ball is dropped, the higher it bounces.

Method:

Drop the ball in a certain height then measure the height of the bounce, repeat this process at least 3 times and collect the data. Compare the data and calculate the average.

Independent Variable: Height dropped.

Dependent Variable: Height measured.

Control Variable: Height bounced.

The Spooks Destiny

Today in English I was a reading a book called The Spooks Destiny. So far the book is about three people that are going on an adventure one of them is the spook and then the other two are normal humans. What a spook does is talk to the ghosts and deal with that stuff.

House of Hauora

For Health Education Year 9 we have been learning about the four dimensions of "Hauora:"

For revision on the subject of Hauora, we had to create a "Whare Tapa Wha," which is a house that has four walls and a roof. Each wall represents a dimension of Hauora, and it symbolises the human body as if one wall collapsed, or one dimension was not balanced, the house would topple. For the roof, we were instructed to write the definition of "Te Whare Tapa Wha."

Maths Inspiration

For the last couple weeks, we have been looking at a series of videos based around having an inspirational week of math that shows everybody can be good at maths and that everybody looks at math and solves problems in different ways.

Along with these videos, there were a set of worksheets to complete using the values and problem-solving techniques shown in the videos. These worksheets often require creative problem-solving and outside-of-the-box thinking.

These videos taught us that anybody can learn maths if they put their mind to it, that speed is not important in math, and that there are many ways to solve one problem in math.

Aim: Measuring how high a table tennis ball bounces back from different heights.

My hypothesis: I think that if we drop the ball from a higher height it will bounce back higher and the lower we drop it the lower it will bounce.

Today I was reading a book called Rise of the Black Panther. So far I can tell that the book is about the king of Wakanda finally meeting outsiders/humans. The black panther is also out to get revenge for dad that got killed by humans

There are 6 books and I am reading the 6th book. it is hard for me to tell what is going on in the story so far just because I haven't read any other books. I am really interested to see how the rest of the book turns out because I have watched the movie and I really liked it
